About

I always find much trouble when I have to talk, or in this case type, about myself. In lieu of giving you my life story, which involves growing up in the streets of Montevideo, Uruguay, winning 2 Super Bowl Championships, 3 Grammy nominations for my spoken word albums and 2 terms as President of the United States, I’d rather just keep it simple and to the point.

When asked what my occupation is, I simply say I’m a “graphic designer”. It’s a nice brief title that keeps me from having to go into a ton of details. But since I need to fill up some space on this page, and I only have to type it once and it’ll be here forever, I think it would be fitting to elaborate.

Outside of being a graphic designer I’m also an illustrator. I feel that I do have somewhat of my own style but I like to be able to stay flexible, which allows me the opportunity to work with a more diverse clientele. My personal style ranges from simplistic to detailed and from clean to grungy.

Typography is also a love of mine. Using existing type is definitely challenging and can create very unique results. Sometimes, though, it’s even better to push it further and create an entire new type treatment that is custom tailored to the project. It’s a tedious job but the results are wonderful.

The theme of this essay seems to be ‘Versatility’. I like to stay versatile and try not to get pigeonholed into just one paradigm. This also helps keep my job interesting on a day-to-day level. Though I can’t imagine doing anything but art, I think I would be very unhappy doing the same style of design/illustration over and over again. I want to be able to grow and even deconstruct and recreate myself. At the same time, I want to have a general style/aesthetic that is recognizable across a group of completely different projects. It’s a fine line that I’m comfortable walking.

While it is nice working with clients who already have a direction in mind on a project, I am always comfortable taking the reins and managing a project’s entire art direction from start to completion. I’m constantly trying to push the boundaries while still being able to keep in mind what the marketplace wants. Following trends won’t yield success, yet being able to extract elements from those trends and deliver a new and refreshing twist certainly will.
